It is the procedure of panchakarma in which the person is induced for purgation with the help of purgative herbs. This treatment is mainly given in disorders of pitta dosha.
The important herbs mainly used in virechan are :
Nishottar - Operculina Terpenthas.
Eranda - Castor
Jaipal - Croton Tinglium.
Haritaki - Terminalia Chebula
Bibhitaki - Terminalia Belerica

Poorvakarma (Pre-Procedure)
Patient has to undergo a thorough examination to get idea of his physical and mental state. This is useful for vaidya to know whether the patient is prepared for the virechan and also the vaidya can decide the strength of medicine to be used for the virechan.
Then the patient is given medicated ghee to drink early in the morning on empty stomach. The ghee is started in the lowest dose and gradually the dose is increased. This ghee treatment is given for 3, 5, 7 days as per the requirement of the patients body.
Along with the ghee treatment the patient is regularly given ext snehan and swedan. After completion of ghee treatment the patient is advised rest for 2-3 days. During this period he is given food void of oil or ghee. But ext snehan and swedan continues.
The night previous to virechan patient is given light diet for dinner which may include veg soup, buttermilk and rice, roti with vegetable etc.

Pradankarma (Main Procedure)
On the main day of virechan patient is told to wake up early, do the early morning activities. Then the patient is given snehan and swedan.After which the patient is given purgative herb in form of powder or tablet along with the decoction supportive for purgation. The patient is assisted by a helper. He is told to keep note of the number of motions the patient has passed, time and type of stools.
The patient should also be advised to drink warm or lukewarm water as per doctor’s advice in between. As per requirement he should also be given decoction to drink in between.
The doctor should keep note and watch on patient’s physical condition along with monitoring of pulse and pressure in between.

When the doctor feels the patient has purgated enough he stops the purgation.

Paschatkarma (Post Procedure)
After completion of virechan the patient is advised to rest and is kept on a diet regimen for6 to7 days further which is prescribed by the doctor.

Skin disorders, obesity, swelling, ascites, irritable bowel syndrome, asthama, cough, vomiting, acidity, digestive disorders

Contradication for Virechan
Indigestion, pregnancy, kids, old age, weak, alcoholic, early post partum, tuberculosis, cardiac disorders, rectal disorders, piles
